Getting sick put a big hole in my work schedule this week, and made me realise the importance of organising backup. On the plus side, I’ve been doing just that – building up a team of freelancers with a range of skills. I’m finding that this is one of the most interesting and exciting parts of running my own business, and LinkedIn has been invaluable in this regard. I found an excellent designer (in the US) through the site, and some potential subcontractors with experience in editing and a background in science (also mainly in the US). What I find interesting is how much I’m affected by the ‘tone’ of someone’s email when deciding whether or not to pursue a possible link. Some people seem to strike a particular balance of professionalism and friendliness that just makes me want to work with them!
